GPS time clock for construction crews: stop paying for hours nobody worked

How a GPS time clock with job site geofences ends timesheet disputes, protects payroll and gives your crew a fair record of every hour.

Paper timesheets and text messages saying "I got there at 7" are the most expensive habit in a small construction company. Nobody is necessarily lying. People round up, forget the lunch break, or fill the whole week on Friday from memory. Multiply fifteen minutes a day by every worker and every week of the year and the number gets serious.

A GPS time clock fixes this without turning the office into the police.

What a construction time clock needs to do

A generic punch app is not enough for a job site. Your crew moves between jobs, works where the signal is weak and does not want to learn a complicated system. A good construction time clock should:

  • Clock in and out from the worker's own phone, with a PIN instead of a password
  • Record the location of every punch and compare it with the job address
  • Show clearly whether the punch was inside or outside the job site radius
  • Register travel from one job to another
  • Close forgotten punches automatically at the end of the day
  • Keep a record of every edit made by the office, with who changed it and when

Geofences: proof of place without arguments

A geofence is an invisible circle around the job address, for example 150 meters. When someone clocks in inside the circle, the record is green. When the punch happens far from the job, the office gets an alert right away.

The point is not to punish. Sometimes the worker stopped at the supply store first, and that is fine. The difference is that now you know, and you can decide how to pay that time with facts instead of guesses.

When the record is clear, the conversation about hours takes thirty seconds instead of thirty minutes.

What about when the GPS fails?

It happens: basements, metal structures, old phones, location turned off. A serious system does not just reject the punch. It tries the precise location first, falls back to the network location and, if nothing works, saves the punch with the reason (permission denied, no signal, timeout). The office sees the reason and decides.

From punches to payroll

The real gain shows up on payday. When the punches already have the job attached, the hours flow into labor cost by job and into the weekly payroll. You stop typing hours twice and you finally see how much each job is costing in labor while it is still running, not after it is over.

How to roll it out with your crew

  • Explain that the clock protects them too: every hour worked is on record
  • Send each worker a personal invite link to create their PIN
  • Run one week in parallel with the old method
  • Turn on reminders for clock in and clock out
  • After the first payroll, review the alerts together

Four Built includes a GPS time clock with geofence, travel between jobs, automatic close, edit history and alerts to the office in both the Field and Build plans. Your field crew is unlimited.
